London's
Heathrow airport (LHR) is the world's busiest airport.
Passengers from around the globe use London Heathrow when visiting the
United Kingdom or as a transit airport to other parts of the world.
FACTS & FIGURES
1. London Heathrow airport is 14 miles (22 km) from the center of London.
2. The airport has four terminals, with a fifth under construction.
3. Over 90 airlines fly to and from Heathrow, serving 170 destinations
and 63 million passengers a year.
4. Each terminal has a selection of shops on both sides of the customs
check points. There are plenty of places to eat and find a drink.
5. All major car hire companies have booths in the terminals. You will
generally find the best car hire price by making your reservation online
before travel.
6. Moving between terminals is easy, using the courtesy shuttle buses.
GETTING TO AND FROM LONDON HEATHROW
1. Road: From the M25, take exit 14. From the M4, take exit 4a. There
are short and long stay car parks for each terminal. Follow the signs
for your terminal.
2. Rail: The Heathrow Express train runs from Paddington mainline rail
station directly to Heathrow. The journey takes 15 minutes to terminals
1, 2 and 3. Add another eight minutes for terminal 4.
3. Bus and Coach: Most services are based at the central bus station
close to terminals 1, 2 and 3. There are only limited bus services from
terminal 4--travel on the free shuttle to the central bus station.
Direct coach services link with Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Glasgow,
Oxford and Reading, Woking and Watford Junction. During the night, bus
N9 connects Heathrow with central London.
4. Taxi: Look for the official London "black cabs" and avoid the
unlicensed cars which often tout for business. Taxis can be found at all
terminals.
5. Underground: Trains run every five minutes and the journey to central
London takes 50-60 minutes. Take the Piccadilly line to and from
Heathrow Central, serving terminals 1, 2 and 3. The terminal 4 station
is closed until June 2006.
